At home in the Luberon

At Home in the Luberon: small group tours to find out what makes this area so unique.

We call our tours ‘At home in the Luberon’ to emphasise that our approach is to organise tours for those who want to get an insider’s view of this special area, its history and culture. We introduce you to our friends, who are the people who make it so unique, and you learn about their crafts, and have the opportunity to enjoy meals in their homes. We’ve carefully chosen all the outings so we can show our visitors why we love living in this part of France.

Special features:

Did you know that one of the biggest Roman amphitheatres in southern France lies underneath the Apt streets or that the Luberon is home to some of the greatest abbeys? Did you know this area was one of the main sources of red ochre and has world famous faience? Find out how the old crafts, like cheese making, beekeeping and wine making are still continuing and learn about local flora and fauna.

Based in the hamlet of Hautes Courennes, close to one of the Luberon's famous hilltop villages: St Martin de Castillon. The holiday offers a chance to learn about Roman and Medieval Provence and its sensual pleasures, and about the other, "hidden" side of Provence of the hard life spent cultivating olives, grapes and wheat.

Expeditions include a visit to an ancient abbey and gardens, the walled medieval town of Avignon, exploring small towns in east Luberon that are among the lavender fields and off the tourist track, local markets to sample local produce, and the chance to learn about Roman Provence. We will visit local artisans who are continuing the traditions of mosaics and cheese making and producing the world-famous Apt faience. One particularly popular aspect is the evenings we arrange in our friends’ houses and a chance to sample local hospitality.

For those who wish, there is a special option to start the day with an hour’s French lesson over breakfast, with an experienced teacher.
