A week in the Luberon

A week in the Luberon: discover the authentic side of Provence.

Learn about this unique part of France, its history and culture, mixing with people who make it so unique, and improve your French.

In June 2012 Hautes Courennes is offering you the opportunity to learn more about Provence's history, culture and the local way of life, while having the opportunity to practice your French. Did you know that one of the biggest Roman amphitheatres in southern France lies underneath the Apt streets or that the Luberon is home to some of the greatest abbeys? Did you know this area was one of the main sources of red ochre and has world-famous faience? Find out how the old crafts, like lavender-oil distilling and wine making are still continuing and learn about local flora and fauna; and use the experience to improve your ability to converse in French.

Based near one of the Luberon's famous hilltop villages: St Martin de Castillon, the holiday offers a chance to learn about Roman and Medieval Provence and its golden industrial era in the nineteenth century, and about the other, "hidden" side of Provence of the hard life spent cultivating olives, grapes and wheat.

Expeditions will include a visit to two Cistercian abbeys, an ochre mine and to two of the region's biggest markets in Coustellet and Forcalquier to sample local produce. Towards the end of the week we will visit local artisans who are continuing the traditions of wine production and lavender distilling, and learn more a unique garden to preserve local flora and fauna. In addition to the daily activities and expeditions, there will be an hour's French revision and conversation with an experienced teacher, in which you will discuss the day's activities.
